If you're moving to Colorado from out of state, two clocks start when you establish residency: one for your vehicle registration and one for your driver's license. Handle both early — missing either can mean fines.
As a rule of thumb, new residents have about 90 days to register a vehicle in Colorado and roughly 30 days to convert an out-of-state driver's license. Deadlines and fees do change, so confirm the current rules with the Colorado DMV (DMV.Colorado.gov) before you arrive.
Registration fees in Colorado are based largely on the vehicle's age and weight, so there's no single flat number — newer and heavier vehicles cost more. Bring your title or current out-of-state registration, proof of Colorado insurance, and, for a vehicle coming from out of state, a VIN verification.
Emissions testing is required in the Denver-metro and North Front Range 'program area' for most gas vehicles before registration. If you're registering there, budget an extra trip to an Air Care Colorado station; vehicles that are only a few model years old are often exempt.
For your license, book an appointment at a Colorado DMV office and bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving Colorado residency (a lease, utility bill, or bank statement). You'll surrender your out-of-state license at the visit.
